The Burmese military government often uses its colonial past and the suffering of the Burmese people under colonial rule to justify its attacks on opposition groups.
The regime regularly accuses its critics, particularly the National League for Democracy, of being a tool of Western nations, most notably the US.
Call it propaganda but in the eyes of Burma’s ruling State Peace and Development Council, the NLD is a collaborator in a new form of neo-colonialist aggression against Burma. Unfortunately, the opposition’s lack of contact with Asian governments helps bolster the junta’s profile of its opponents.
And it does not bode well for reconciliation in Burma.
