USDA to hold pro-government rallies

Nov 26, 2007 (DVB), The Union Solidarity and Development Association is organising mass rallies in Khayan township, Rangoon division, to show opposition to a statement by democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Divisional USDA members have been organising the pro-government rallies to denounce Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's statement of 8 November in which she called for genuine dialogue and stressed the need to take into account the views of ethnic political groups in any negotiations.

A propaganda campaign to promote the rallies was started yesterday by Khayan township USDA secretary U Myint Oo and is due to last for five days.

USDA members have told local residents as an incentive that they will issue identity cards to everyone who attends the rallies who does not already have one.

The state-run New Light of Myanmar newspaper has been running a number of announcements since early November from ethnic and other political groups who purportedly object to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's statement.

The announcements claim that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said that she would represent ethnic groups in dialogue with the regime and say that this should not be the case.
