Rescue workers told DVB that they have recovered 107 bodies, including seven children, and have saved 52 people from the Sky Villa Condominium in Aungmyaythazan Township of Mandalay Region over the last one month since the 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28.
“We’re still looking for the bodies under the rubble,” a source close to the regime Mandalay City Development Committee told DVB on the condition of anonymity. Most of the survivors are still in hospital receiving medical attention, the source added.
The township Health Department is reportedly assisting in identifying the deceased as many bodies recovered over the last few weeks have decomposed beyond recognition. Mandalay is located 15 miles (24 km) east of the earthquake epicenter of Sagaing Township in Sagaing Region.
Sixteen bodies were recovered and nine people were rescued from the Great Wall Hotel in Maha Aungmyay Township from March 28 to April 12, according to the hotel owner. The Myanmar Fire Services Department shared on April 16 that the operation to find and recover the dead from the rubble continues.
Residents of Mandalay and Sagaing stated that they felt a tremor on Sunday. The regime Department of Meteorology and Hydrology reported that a 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck nine miles northeast of Mandalay. It has recorded 158 aftershocks as of Monday.
The regime in Naypyidaw reported that 3,769 bodies have been recovered, 5,106 have been injured, and 107 are still missing as of April 27. The death toll stands at 4,456 with 2,865 bodies recovered from Mandalay, according to DVB data.
