BRIEF - Al Qaeda announces presence in Burma and India

Al Qaeda chief Ayman al Zawahiri on Wednesday announced the launch of a new branch active in Burma and the Indian subcontinent. In a 55-minute video, Zawahiri said the aim of the expansion, called “Qaedat al-Jihad”, is to restore Islam to the region. Some have speculated that the announcement was meant to renew international attention, as the threat of Al Qaeda has been recently eclipsed by the growing Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. Zawahiri tops the most wanted terrorist list in the US, with a US$25 million bounty for his apprehension.
