The Parliament Rights Committee said on 28 May that Union-level parliamentarians’ salaries don’t meet their expenses, raising speculation of a possible pay raise. The comments were made during the opening of the 9th session of parliament. Burma’s MPs receive 300,000 kyat (US$300) per month and an additional 10,000 kyat per diem for food and accommodation. Last week, citizens were outraged when the vice-president insinuated $2 per day was a livable wage for people in Burma. The president’s spokesperson later said the comment had been “misinterpreted”.
