BRIEF - KIA, govt to resume peace talks

Government representatives will meet members of the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) on 13 May to try to resolve recent violence in northern Burma. The meeting will be held in the Kachin capital Myitkyina, as requested by KIA leadership. Resumption of state-level peace talks, stalled for the past six months, was solicited by the KIA after several weeks of fighting that has displaced more than 3,000 civilians. Negotiations precede a bilateral meeting of ethnic groups and government peace-makers in the effort to secure a nationwide ceasefire agreement.
