BRIEF – Rangoon residents can’t wait for monsoon season

A lack of rain ahead of the monsoon season is causing ponds and lakes around Rangoon to dry up, resulting in water shortages for many of the city’s six million inhabitants. According to Burma’s state-run New Light of Myanmar, many Rangoonites are forced to walk or cycle distances to fetch water from ponds, while others are relying on donations of drinking water from charity groups who send water trucks to neighbourhoods in need. Daily temperatures have been around 35°C (95°F).
