BRIEF - UN Rapporteur concerned about ‘veto power’ of military

Outgoing UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Burma, Tómas Ojea Quintana, expressed his concerns on 24 May about the supposed veto power of Burma’s military with regard to democratic and economic reforms and amending the country’s Constitution. With his tenure as rapporteur due to end on 31 May, Quintana said the military’s power to block reform did not bode well for next year’s general election.
