BUSINESS - Environmentalists slam China timber policy

China’s proposed guidelines for timber trade are insufficient and should be replaced with a legally binding ban on illegal wood, environmentalists said. London-based Environmental Investigation Agency submitted recommendations to the Chinese government on Tuesday, claiming that “massive flows of illegal timber” cause irreversible damage. In Burma, “rampant” demand is likely to cause the extinction of two species of rosewood, EIA said. Burma banned the export of raw timber as of 1 April, but no such import ban is in place across the border.
