Govt official sentenced to life for corruption

Hla Htay, a former government administrator in Pwintbyu, Magwe Division, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of embezzlement. State-run media reported the decision by Minbu District Court, which found that Hla Htay had syphoned over 260 million kyat (US$260,000) from funds designated to buy fertiliser for farmers. Hla Htay’s sentence is the harshest punishment levelled to a corrupt government administrator to date and follows Burma’s recently passed Anti-Corruption Law.
