Rohingya doctor freed from prison

A prominent Rohingya doctor who was arrested in 2012 while apparently trying to diffuse violence between Rohingya Muslims and Arakanese Buddhists has been released. Tun Aung was sentenced to 17 years in prison for inciting riots in western Burma, despite observers insisting that he was asked to intervene by authorities. His trial was deemed by many observers to be unfair. Activist group Equality Myanmar have welcomed the release, while highlighting the continued detention of many more “dissenters”, including peaceful protesters and journalists.
