The latest voter list for Pobbathiri Township in Naypyidaw contains an additional 10,000 voters who cannot be verified, according to a representative of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD).
“There were no addresses on the voter lists when they were released last year. Now, an additional 11,000 voters – also without addresses – have appeared,” said Sun Win, a representative for the NLD in the constituency, which is currently held by the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party.
He said that the original registrar listed 59,000 voters in Pobbathiri, while this week’s list, released on 2 November, contains more than 70,000 names.
Sun Win said he and other NLD members had been to the Township Election Commission to enquire.
“When we spoke to the commission, they said they could not insert the addresses of voters due to time constraint,” he told DVB on Friday.
“Most of the ‘additional’ names are in Tat-Pobba quarter where a large number of retired soldiers live, and very few members of our party. That makes investigating the matter very difficult.”
