Burma’s perennially contentious relationship with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation moved no closer toward amicability this week as the two sides traded barbs over the situation in Rakhine State, where a mass exodus of Rohingya Muslims tied to allegations of ethnic cleansing has heaped global censure on the government.

"This is in no way a repatriation, rather it is propaganda," said the Bangladeshi government's Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner.

Burma wants to see clear evidence to support accusations that ethnic cleansing or genocide has been perpetrated against its Muslim minority in Rakhine State, National Security Adviser Thaung Tun said on Thursday.

Bangladesh will send a protest note to Burma over an increased security presence near a portion of their border where thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been sheltering just inside Burma, a Bangladesh border guard official said on Thursday.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled a strip of land on the border between Burma and Bangladesh after the two countries met to discuss resettling them, an official and a community leader said.

The United States on Tuesday described Burma’s denials of ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims as “preposterous” as it called on the UN Security Council to hold the military accountable and pressure leader Aung San Suu Kyi “to acknowledge these horrific acts that are taking place in her country.”
