Pe Maung Same Film Fund established for Myanmar filmmakers

In honour of the late documentary filmmaker Pe Maung Same, a memorial film screening was held at Chiang Mai University (RCSD) on Sept. 7. Four Pe Maung Same documentaries: Like Father Like Son, Samanera, The River: Our Ayeyarwaddy, and No Laughing Matter, were screened free of charge.

“We decided that this was a good way to honour [his legacy],” said Lay Thida, a filmmaker and close friend of Pe Maung Same. Organizers told DVB that over 150 people attended and that 37,110 baht ($1,099.75 USD) was raised to establish a Pe Maung Same Film Fund.

“He loved the documentary [film genre], and he loved to teach people,” added Lay Thida. Pe Maung Same died on Aug. 19 at the age of 50 – three days after being released from Insein Prison.
