The United Nations has warned aid workers in western Burma of rising hostility and imminent protests from troubled Arakan State’s majority Buddhists, some of whom say humanitarian agencies are giving support to Rohingya Muslim militants.

In a surprise move, Commander-in-Chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing and top officials from the Arakan National Party (ANP) met in Naypyidaw on Wednesday, according to the Office of the Commander-in-Chief.

Maung Thway Chon, the would-be chairman of the PUP, said, "Our policy is anti-Bengali and to lead in the development of Buddhism."

Local authorities have asked Muslim community leaders to shutter a mosque and madrasa that they say were opened without the proper permitting in Kyun Pone Lay village, Taikkyi, a township on the outskirts of Rangoon that was the site of deadly inter-religious violence in 2013.

The Buddhist nationalist group formerly known as Ma Ba Tha once again struck a defiant tone this week, releasing a statement proclaiming: “No matter which names the association has adopted, no changes will be made in terms of the standpoint of the association.”
