73 freed from Insein prison

Oct 29, 2007 (DVB), 73 people who were arrested in connection with last month's mass anti-government protests were released from Insein prison in Rangoon on 25 October.

Among those released were 50 National League for Democracy members, including elected people's parliament representative Hla Pe, 10 women and 13 monks.

However, a number of other detainees who were arrested during the demonstrations continue to be held at the prison, according to those released.

NLD people's parliament representative and central information committee member Myint Thein, Magwe division NLD chairman Han Zaw and elected representative U Bala are among those who remain in detention.

The abbots of Maggin and Ngwekyaryan monasteries were disrobed following their arrests and are still being held along with many other monks.

Mya Than Htaik, an NLD youth member in Thingangyun township, remains in Insein prison and is suffering from health problems due to the gunshot wound he sustained during the protests.

The former detainees said that many protestors were beaten during the protests and subsequent interrogation sessions, and have not received adequate medical attention for their injuries.
