Fighting intensifies in Shan State

Fighting between the Shan State Army-North (SSA-N) and the Burmese army has intensified in Loilem District, in the south of central Shan State. The fighting broke out on 6 October when the Burmese army manoeuvred into Kehsi Mansam, in Kyethi Township, where it engaged SSA-N forces in gunfire.

Government forces were forced to evacuate their wounded, and sent for further reinforcements when the conflict escalated on 10 October.

The SSA-N’s Information Department confirmed the fighting ended briefly on 9 October, but resumed the next day after Burmese forces received reinforcements. The office reported that gunfire could still be heard as of noon on 11 October in Loilem’s Monghsu Township.

The Shan rebels further stated that the Burmese military had been directing artillery fire at them, including 120mm rounds, from their base in Kyumaukhaung, just six kilometres away from the SSA-N headquarters in Wanhai.
