Rallies in Mandalay, Rangoon call for an end to civil war

Renowned activist group 88 Generation Peace and Open Society (88GPOS) is planning a public movement to call for an end to civil conflict across the country.

Ko Jimmy, a leading member of 88GPOS, said the group is inviting others to a 25 November meeting to “brainstorm” ideas for the upcoming movement.

“We are inviting celebrities, youth organisations and political activists to brainstorm ideas as to what we can do to call for an end to the civil war and bring about peace – we want to come up with something where people of all walks of life can participate,” said Ko Jimmy.

The group had a preliminary meeting on Monday to discuss the initiative.

Ko Jimmy said the organisation should be ready to begin work by the end of November, starting first in Rangoon.

Meanwhile, around 50 youth activists in the former capital staged a music performance on Sunday at Inya Lake, ‘Looking for Peace Through a Guitar’, calling for an end to hostilities between the government and rebel forces.

In central Shan State, some 5,000 residents remain displaced by fighting in the area, prompting locals to hold a rally in Mandalay’s Manawraman Park on Tuesday, calling for the immediate end to the clashes.

Kai Sai, a Pyin Oo Lwin resident, told DVB: “We wish for peace – for everyone to stop fighting and to live in peace.”

Another participant, Doi Mai, said: “Everybody hates the war – many people suffer in conflict and we are joining the protest as we wish to see an end to the fighting.”

Despite requesting a delegation of representatives from Shan State Army-North travel to Naypyidaw to discuss a truce, the Burmese army have continued an assault on the positions of the rebel group.
