88 Generation leaders' families barred from hearings

Oct 7, 2008 (DVB), Khin Maung Shein, the central court lawyer who represents Min Ko Naing and other 88 Generation Student leaders, said his clients have called for their families to be allowed to attend their court hearings.

Relatives of the student leaders were told yesterday morning that they would no longer be allowed to attend the hearings because authorities said their presence could delay the process.

Khin Maung Shein said the student leaders had raised the matter at an earlier hearing.

"Min Ko Naing and other student leaders told authorities during the previous hearing in Thanganhyin township court to reinstate permission for their families to attend their court hearings as usual," Khin Maung Shein said.

"They said they will take further steps if permission has not been granted by the next court hearing."

The next court hearings are due to take place on 17 and 20 October.

Thirty-five family members have also signed a petition urging the authorities to grant them permission to attend the hearings.

The petition was sent to the Insein prison chief today.
