NLD and NUG dismiss Aung San Suu Kyi’s ICRC visit as sign of political progress in Myanmar crisis

The National League for Democracy (NLD) and the National Unity Government (NUG) have issued formal statements cautioning the international community against viewing the recent meeting between jailed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as a sign of genuine progress in resolving Myanmar’s crisis.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the NLD emphasized that a single humanitarian visit does not indicate structural change, calling for full legal counsel, family access, safety, and unrestricted communication for the families of all political prisoners in Myanmar.

NLD and NUG Stance: Humanitarian Development vs. Political Legitimacy

While acknowledging the Aug. 3 meeting in Naypyidaw between the 81-year-old Nobel laureate and ICRC Resident Representative Arnaud de Baecque as a “positive humanitarian development,” the NUG stressed that the visit fails to address core concerns regarding Suu Kyi’s health, detention conditions, and ongoing isolation from family and medical professionals.

The NUG recognizes Aung San Suu Kyi as Myanmar’s legitimate State Counsellor and Win Myint as President. Win Myint, who was reportedly moved to house arrest under tight security on April 17, remains isolated from supporters and party members.

Resistance Leaders Warn of Junta Distraction Tactics

Prominent pro-democracy activist Min Ko Naing characterized the regime-sanctioned ICRC visit as a calculated maneuver timed to undermine resistance momentum and buy political time for junta chief Min Aung Hlaing ahead of upcoming regional engagements.

Myanmar Political & Resistance Landscape (August 2026)
├── Parallel Civilian Leadership:
│ ├── State Counsellor: Aung San Suu Kyi (18-year sentence; incommunicado)
│ └── President: Win Myint (House arrest under tight security)
├── Unified Resistance Alliance (SCEF):
│ ├── Civilian Bodies: NUG & CRPH (2020 Elected Lawmakers)
│ └── Ethnic Armed Groups: KNU, KNPP, CNF, & KIO
└── Regime Status:
└── Min Aung Hlaing (Self-inaugurated president following staged 2025–26 elections)

Min Ko Naing urged the international community to focus support on the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF)—the premier resistance alliance uniting the NUG, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), and four key ethnic armed organizations: the Karen National Union (KNU), Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP), Chin National Front (CNF), and Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).

“This is a tactic to prolong their grip on power, distract people’s attention from the resistance, buy time, and sow division among the resistance,” Min Ko Naing told media outlet People’s Spring. “This [SCEF alliance] is our opportunity to achieve victory.”

Family and International Calls for Independent Verification

Aung San Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris, welcomed the ICRC visit as a “sign of hope” while calling for further concrete verification steps:

  • Independent Medical Care: Aris urged the regime to allow follow-up ICRC visits and permit an independent physician to perform a comprehensive medical examination of his mother.
  • Global Demands for Prisoner Release: The U.N., European Union, United Kingdom, and ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) welcomed the ICRC’s access but reiterated demands for the immediate, unconditional release of all political detainees.

Detention Overview and Political Prisoner Data

According to figures from the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP):

  • Total Political Detainees: At least 31,619 individuals have been arrested for political reasons since the February 1, 2021 coup.
  • Currently Incarcerated: 14,644 political prisoners remain in regime custody.

Aung San Suu Kyi is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence, commuted down from an original 33-year sentence through partial reductions since 2022.

While regime media claimed on April 30 that she was transferred from prison to house arrest in Naypyidaw, no independent evidence has been provided to substantiate the transfer.
