Both government and opposition on 27 March separately marked the 65th annual Armed Forces Day (or Resistance Day), which commemorates the start of the Burmese army’s resistance to Japanese occupation in 1945. Detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi said in a statement on the day that civilians and the army should unite in order to create a democratic Burma, while junta chief Than Shwe said that the assimilation of military and government was necessary in the fight for independence.
