Burmese astrologers read different election outcomes

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Gemini.

This is a telling piece of biographical data for local astrologer San Zarni Bo. According to him, the fate of Suu Kyi’s political career depends on it.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was born on June 19, 1945, making her a Gemini, the star sign of kings,” he told the Myanmar Times in an interview. “Gemini relates to Myanmar and will become increasingly powerful in 2016, the year in which Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will assume a leading position in the government. That’s the presidency.”

But since the constitution bars Suu Kyi from assuming the presidency because her kids are foreign citizens, San Zarni Bo’s prediction seems far-fetched. Suu Kyi herself said in a recent interview that she doesn’t need to be the president to lead the country.

Steeped in tradition, astrology is still popular in Myanmar, with palm readers camped out on the streets and star-gazing consultants ready to tell your future for a fee. But it’s difficult to know how seriously the political predictions are taken.

One thing that might give believers pause is the fact that not all astrologers agree.

Aung Myin Kyaw, the in-house horoscope writer at the Myanmar Times (yes, the Myanmar Times has an in-house horoscope writer), is leaning towards the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, while “mind reader” U Oung Si Heinn is hedging his bets, the Times reported. He thinks the next president will be a man but that man, whoever he is, will create a path for a future Suu Kyi presidency.

Even San Zarni Bo’s predictions clash somewhat. He claims that Suu Kyi will be president, but he also claims that the election on November 8 will be postponed, making it all the more difficult for Suu Kyi to be president in 2016.

“The election is scheduled for November 8. But it will definitely be postponed to a future unspecified date, not because of riot or unrest but for some other reason,” he said.

Unfortunately, we don’t have an in-house astrologer to add our own predictions to the mix.
