A Burmese migrant worker in Chiang Mai abandoned her newborn baby on the doorstep of a police officer’s house on Sunday.

Having traced the child’s mother through records at a local hospital where the baby was born, police in Mae Rim District on Monday arrested Shan migrant Nang Uzana, 27, and detained her on child abandonment charges.

Mae Rim police Dep-Supt Ruthakarn Metta told reporters that the baby boy, wrapped in a green towel from Sansai Hospital, was left outside a house in Tambon Mae Sa. Police then traced the mother to a rented house in the neighbourhood.

Nang Uzana, a migrant from southern Shan State’s Namsang Township, confessed to the police that she abandoned the child as she could not afford to raise him.

A police sergeant at Mae Rim police station told DVB on Wednesday that Nang Uzana’s case has now been processed, and she was released from a Chiang Mai court after paying a fine. Her whereabouts are now unknown.

The baby boy has been taken in by a ‘safe house’ in the northern Thai city, pending a decision from the court on where to send him.
