Mar 20, 2008 (DVB), The Committee Representing the People's Parliament has said the Burmese government's planned national referendum is not legitimate and vowed to join with the people of Burma to fight for democracy.

The group said in a statement that the ruling junta had called the referendum with the intention of prolonging their dictatorship, and denounced the plans as illegitimate given that there were already People's Parliament representatives who had been chosen by the people.

The group states its total disagreement with the referendum and said its members would join hands with the people of Burma to fight for democracy.

CRPP secretary U Aye Thar Aung said it was the duty of the National League for Democracy, who won the last election in 1990, to decide what action should be taken.

"Now there are two methods people are planning to use against the national referendum , to vote no and to completely boycott the whole thing," he said.

"It is the NLD’s responsibility as the election-winning party in 1990 to tell people what they should actually do. By doing so, the NLD will bring people into unity."

But Aye Thar Aung said he was personally against any participation in the referendum.

"In my personal opinion, going to a polling station to vote No still counts as participation in the referendum and I am against that idea," he said.
