10 February 2021 News Briefing

  • More than 80 detained protesters, arrested in yesterday’s anti-coup demonstration in Mandalay were released this afternoon (Feb 10).
  • Military-run media has described in its news release on Feb 9  “about 2,000 of demonstrators violently assaulted the police with rocks and stones and other objects that could cause injuries”. In yesterday’s anti-coup demonstrations, several anti-coup protesters were  injured, some of them seriously by police force use of water cannons and also rubber bullets. The military-run media justified  “in accord with the legal procedures to stop violence”.
  • NLD chairman and secretary in Hopan Township, Wa Special Region were arrested at home around 8:30 pm on Feb 9, confirmed locals. According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), as of Feb 9, a total of 190 people; activists, lawmakers and officials from NLD’s government,  have been arrested and detained since Feb 1 coup, and a total of 171 are still under detention.
  • Kayin ethnic nationals from more than 50 villages in Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade-6/7 area in Kawkareik District, Kayin state, have joined the general anti-military coup demonstration today (Feb 10).
  • Film artists have protested this morning (Feb 10) starting from Nat Mauk Road, Bahan township where the Myanmar Motion Picture Organization is located, to show standing with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and to support the Civil Disobedience Movement. 
  • Staff from the Department of Archaeology and National Museum, Bagan, announced a statement today that they stand with the people and support the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
  • It is reported that about 80 staff from Central Bank Myanmar (Yangon Branch) joined the  Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM).
  • Yangon Eye Hospital is closed (except for emergency patients) in support of the Civil Disobedience Movement.
  • Yangon Region Hluttaw Representative Committee(YRHRC),  committee was recently-formed by elected MPs of Yangon‌ region of civilian govt issued a statement today on  NLD’s facebook page that all the staff working for Yangon Region Hluttaw are not required to attend office, declared as an official holiday. The statement added it will help and support the staff who are participating in CDM. 
  • There are protests in front of the Embassy of the People Republic of China, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and Embassy of the United States today (Feb 10) in Yangon against the military coup.
  • About 7,000 Myanmar national migrant workers have been infected with Covid-19 in Samut Sakhon province, Thailand, according to the Bangkok Post.
  • The newly-formed Union Election Commission by military coup assigned U Saw Ba Hlaing and U Saw Oo as the member of commission on Feb9. 
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sent US $ 350 million in cash to the civilian government as emergency aid to help Myanmar combat Covid-19 on days before Feb 1  military coup, according to Today Online News.

  • Although imposing public gatherings of more than 5 people under the section of 144, there are anti-coup mass protests still happening in downtown Yangon, also in Manday around this noon of Feb 9. 
  • It is reported that about 30 protesters and the DVB’s correspondent have been arrested at around 11:30 am today during the anti-coup demonstration in Mandalay, after that at around 12:30 pm DVB correspondent was released. 
  • A ban on public gatherings of more than 5 people, delivering speeches, protesting, along with rioting by vehicles or in person, and a 8pm-4pm curfew  was imposed under section 144 of the Penal Code have been issued in 44 townships of Yangon (except Coco Island), Mandalay, Naypyidaw and other states and regions on Feb 9.
  • On Monday(feb8) night, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of Myanmar’s junta, addressed the nation for the first time  since a coup a week ago. In his address, as previously, justifying their takeover that there were election frauds in both pre election and post election, and asked for justice on those election frauds, but no consideration was provided by UEC. And he added a new election would be held and power handed to the winning party, and urging the public to prioritise actual facts but not feelings.
  • Members of National League for Democracy (NLD) and the public staged a protest in front of the NLD headquarters in Yangon this morning (Feb 9) against the military coup.
  • In Tachileik, Shan State, U Tint Swe, chairman of Mizzima Social Association and U Kyaw Myint, a member of NLD were arrested last night (Feb 8).
  • About 1,000 teachers, students and lawyers in Bago have joined the anti-coup demonstration at 8:30 am this morning.
  • Hundreds of thousands of protesters including educational workers, judiciary, and health workers in Myeik, Tanintharyi region, joined the protest as the third day on Feb 9 against the military dictatorship.
  • As of 8 PM, 8 Feb, a total of 1,987 samples were tested and found more 4 new cases and 2 deaths. MoHS has reported 141,427 of total confirmed cases including 

127,975  discharged, and 3,177 deaths.

  • New Zealand Foreign Minister Hon Nanaia Mahuta announced  that  it will suspend all high-level political and  military contact with Myanmar. The announcement expressed   “deeply concerned at the coup in Myanmar, and do not recognise the legitimacy of the military-led government and call on the military to immediately release all detained political leaders and restore civilian rule”.
  • In Maha Aung Myay township, Mandalay, two protesters were killed and three others were injured when a car hit a motorcycle, and people in 38th street at around 7:30 pm on Feb 8 and it ran away, according to Ko Hlaing Min Oo, Myanmar Social Relief Organization.
  • Monks from Thidagu Buddhist Universities called for a peaceful way to form a government as soon as possible in line with the public will and actions in accordance with the Dhamma, according to the joint statement by Thidagu Buddhist Universities on Feb 8.
  • The lists of the townships under the order of section 144 of Penal Code include; 44 townships (except Coco Island) in Yangon region, Pyinmana, Lelway, Tatkone, Zayar Thiri, Dakkhina Thiri, Pobba Thiri, Ottara Thiri, Zabu Thiri in Naypyidaw council territory,  Chan Mya Tharzi, Pyi Gyi Tagon, Mahar Aung Myay, Chan Aye Tharzan, Aung Myay Tharzan, Patheingyi, Myingyan, Amarapura in Mandalay region, Magway, Pokkou in Magway region, Sagaing, Shwebo, Monywa, Kalay in Sagaing region, Winemaw, Bamaw, Moekaung, Shweku, Moenyin, Hpakant in Kachin state, Loikaw in Kayah state, Mawlamyine, Than Phyu Zayat, Yay, Kyaikto in Mon state, Kyinetone, Taunggyi, Tachileik, Naungcho, Lashio, Kalaw, Thibaw, Muse, Kyaukme in Shan state, Kyainseikgyi, Myawaddy, Hpa-an in Kayin state.
  • Karen State Chief Minister Nang Khin Htwe Myint, a member of the NLD Central Executive Committee, was arrested for a second time by the military February 8, according to The NLD Central Committee member Kyi Toe. 
  • It is reported the newly formed military-run government has offered to some political parties including the SNLD, The New Society Democratic Party and other ethnic parties to join the government,  and the offer was rejected.
  • Myanmar Railway workers in Yangon have also joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and protested in front of the Insein Park against the military coup.

  • Thousands are continuing to take to the streets across Myanmar to protest against military coup.  Labour unions, factory workers, some civil servants organizations and students are prominently participating in groups by representing their organizations’ identity in the current mass protests  across the country. In Yangon, Myanmar’s main city, a few celebrities: Project K and Htar Htet Htet also join in the street demonstrations.
  • In Naypyidaw on today(Feb8), anti-military coup demonstrators were dispersed by police using water cannon  anti-riot vehicle and leaving some demonstrators injured.
  • U Maung Maung has been appointed as deputy mayor of the Naypyidaw Development Committee, according to the statement of the State Administrative Council on Feb 7.
  • Departmental staff and teachers in Kawthaung, Tanintharyi region, have joined the protest against military dictatorship on Feb 8.
  • Sagaing region Chief Minister was rearrested for a second time on Feb 8  for giving a speech to the public on social media. At present, in Sagaing region, Cabinet Ministers, Speaker of the Hluttaw Vice Chairman, and  other officials were also detained.
  • Kayin State Chief Minister Nang Khin Htwe Myint, placed under house arrest, was taken away by the troops and police from Govt’s Housing at 2 pm this afternoon (Feb 8)  in Hpa-An.
  • Health workers from 550 Bedded Children Hospital in Mandalay have  joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) against the military dictatorship, chronically ill patients and ordinary patients are being treated free at the outpatient clinics, according to a specialist from Children Hospital.
  • Newly-appointed deputy ministers by State Administrative Council on Feb 7 include;
  1. U Than Aung Kyaw – Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations
  2. U Ye Tint – Ministry of Information
  3. Major General Zaw Min Htun – Ministry of Information
  4. Major General Lu Mon – Ministry of Transport and Communication
  5. U Nyunt Aung – Ministry of Commerce
  6. U Myo Hlaing – Ministry of Health and Sport
  • A total of 4 outpatients clinics and hospitals in Yangon are providing free medical services for the patients who needed rescheduled appointments as a lot of health workers from Yangon Central Women’s Hospital joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) by not serving under the military dictatorship. 
  • Myanmar nationals in Japan are planning to support the staff members of the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) if they have any difficulties, Ma Naing Naing from Nagoya city in Japan told DVB.

  • Tens of thousands of ethnic people in Loikaw, Kayah state, peacefully demonstrated their opposition to the military coup this morning (Feb 8).
  • It is reported that thousands of anti-coup protesters are continuing marching in towns and cities across Myanmar today(Feb8).
  • It is reported that at least 10 people were injured when around 20 police opened fire  with rubber bullets on Feb 7 at a peaceful anti-military-coup demonstration of about 200 people  in Myawaddy, Karen State. 
  • The National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a statement on Feb7  that has called on  the  international countries and organizations that have formal diplomatic ties with Myanmar not to cooperate with illegitimate the government and organizations formed by the coup that forcibly seizes state sovereignty.  The statement expressed that to work together on bilateral issues with the government led by President U Win Myint that democratically elected by the people.
  • It is urged for an anti-military coup movement of banging on pots and pans to be held three times(8 a.m, 2 p.m and 8 p.m) a day. Since Feb 2 the movement has always started at 8 PM banging on pots & pans for about 30 mins including long honking & singing revolutionary songs in Yangon, followed by other states and regions. There have been being threatened, arrested, and imprisoned by police in some cities because of these movements, but still  more and more people are joining that movement day by day.
  • It is reported that Sagaing regional MPs elected by the people in the November election held successfully on Feb 7 the first regular Hluttaw session, according to NLD facebook page  and released a statement that the Sagaing regional government   led by Dr Myint Naing remain officially in that region. Of the 74 elected representatives, 34 attended the meeting in person and 33 people attended with an online conferencing system. The other 7 MPs were detained by the Military Coup and could not attend the meeting.
  • On 6 Feb, the 2020 election elected MPs of the Yangon Region Hluttaw  held their first regular session of the Yangon Region Hluttaw for the third time (the first day) with an online conferencing system.
  • On 7 Feb 2021, the 2020 election elected representatives of the Tanintharyi Region Hluttaw held the third regular session of the Tanintharyi Region Hluttaw for the third time (first day) with an online conferencing system.Of the 21 elected representatives, 18 attended the meeting. The other three MPs were detained by military coup and could not attend the meeting, according to NLD facebook page.
  • A total of about 300 Myanmar nationals including migrant workers, monks, students, and entrepreneurs in Thailand staged protests on Feb 7 in front of the Myanmar Embassy and UN Office in Bangkok against the military coup.
  • On Feb 7, Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with the people of Myanmar protesting against the military coup and called on those in positions of responsibility in the country to show the sincere willingness to serve the common good, promoting social justice and national stability for harmonious and democratic coexistence.
  • As of 8 PM,7 Feb, a total of 7,112 samples were tested and found more 54 new cases and 5 deaths. MoHS has reported 141,423 of total confirmed cases including 

127,684  discharged, and 3,175 deaths.

  • Attempt to dissolve the Union Government by force of arms and lawlessness was a criminal offense against the Union Government in violation of the provisions of Chapter 6 of the Penal Code, according to the statement issues on Feb 8 by  Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) recently formed by Nov election elected MPs.
  • On Feb 6, the United States supports the right of Myanmar people to protest in support of the democratically elected government and their right to freely access information and repeats its calls for the military to relinquish power, restore the democratically elected government, release detained officials, lift all the telecommunications restrictions, and refrain from violence, according to the Statement of Thomas Vajda, U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar. 

07 February 2021 News Briefing

  • The internet Wifi and Mobile data services which have also been disrupted on 6 Feb resumed in the late afternoon of 7 Feb, and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram service are still blocked.
  • Since early morning of today thousands protesters are continuing marching against military coup as the second day in Yangon, the major commercial city, in the downtowns areas, and many dozens of groups are also gathering for protest in the other townships of Yangon by making the three-fingered salute sign, singing revolutionary songs and honking. So far there is no violence and deadly crackdown by the military.
  • There are continuing country-wide anti-coup demonstrations in Myanmar today(7 Feb).
  • It was country-wide rumored that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was released last night on Feb 6.
  •  Hundreds of thousands of people have protested today(Feb 7) in Mandalay, the second-largest city after Yangon, against the military dictatorship.
  • More than 5,000 Myanmar nationals in Japan staged a protest today(Feb7) in front of the Myanmar embassy in Tokyo that they stand together with the people in Myanmar and support their movements against the military coup.  
  • NLD issued on Feb 5 a letter to the public describing welcomes and acknowledges the efforts of the people protecting against military coup and  appeal to the people and civil servants to believe that the sovereignty of the country can be regained through peacefully protesting the disobedience movement.
  • U Maung Maung Win and Daw Than Than Linn were recently appointed as deputy ministers for Planning, Finance, and Industry by military coup,  according to the announcement of the State Administrative Council on Feb 4.
  • Press Release Team of the State Administrative Council including 3 members led by Major General Zaw Min Tun, was formed currently according to the announcement of the State Administrative Council on Feb 5.
  • The Myanmar President Office was renamed the State Administrative Council Office and the name of the Union Government was also replaced with the State Administrative Council Administration Office by military coup,  according to the announcement of the State Administrative Council on Feb 4.
  • The National League for Democracy (NLD) Central Executive Committee issued a statement on Feb 5 urging the United Nations and other countries to work energetically together for democracy and independence for the people of Myanmar.
  • Nearly 300 NLD’s 2020 election elected Pyidaungsu Hluttaw MPs convened an emergency meeting (Online Conferencing System) on Feb 5 to form the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Committee Representative Committee (CRPH) with 15 members and issued the statement expressing the CRPH  has been formed to carry out the necessary matters for the normal functioning of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and to release all detainees by military coup. Representatives  from Denmark, Sweden,  United States and the Czech Republic  embassies also attended this meeting as guests, according to the NLD’s Facebook page.
  • Indonesia and Malaysia are calling for an ASEAN meeting to discuss the military coup in Myanmar, and both leaders urge Myanmar to resolve the political differences in accordance with the law. Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo added that Myanmar authorities to observe and respect the principle of the ASEAN Charter including the rule of law, good governance, democracy, human rights, and constitutionally elected government, after a meeting with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin at the presidential palace in Jakarta on Feb 5.
  • It is reported that residents in Monywa, Sagaing region launched a poster campaign on Feb 6 as a protest against the military and the highest numbers of departmental staff in Monywa have also joined the Civil Disobedience Campaign.
  • Myanmar nationals and supporters in Melbourne, Australia, staged a protest on the  morning of Feb 6 against the military coup.
  • Students from the National Management Degree College (NMDC) will not continue their education as a Civil Disobedience Movement against the military coup, according to the statement of NMDC Students’ Union on Feb 5.

  • Daw Thet Thet Khine, the chair of The People’s Pioneer Party (PPP) has been appointed by the State Administrative Council as the Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, according to a statement issued by 8 pm on February 4. In the 2020 general election, Daw Thet Thet Khine had lost a seat in the Pyithu Hluttaw representing PPP’s Mayangone township in Yangon. She is a former NLD party candidate and in the 2015 general election,  won in Yangon’s Dagon township constituency as an NLD candidate and then in 2019 founded the PPP  after leaving the NLD.
  • On Thursday, the UN Security Council issued a joint statement expressing “deep concern” at events in Myanmar and called for the  immediate release of  all detainees by the military, and encouraged “the pursuance of dialogue and reconciliation in accordance with the will and interests of the people of Myanmar”. The council also expressed concern about the restrictions on civil society, journalists and media. The statement was issued two days after the council held an emergency meeting.
  • As of 8 PM, 4 Feb, a total of 13,846 samples were tested and found more 177 new cases and 3 deaths. MoHS has reported 141,104 of total confirmed cases including 126,869  discharged, and 3,163 deaths.
  • President Joe Biden urged the Myanmar Military to release all detainees and  expressed “to  relinquish the power they have seized, lift the restrictions on telecommunications, and refrain from violence against civilians”, he also added that the United States is working with its allies and partners to address the military’s takeover, said in his first foreign policy speech as a president on Feb 4,  according to a Reuters report.
  • Japanese MPs have condemned the military’s coup and called for the immediate release of all detainees including State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, sanctions will be imposed under the Japanese-style Magnitsky Act in line with Japan’s human right diplomacy standards. 
  • Facebook has temporarily identified Myanmar as a high-risk country after the military coup, saying it will remove any calls for armaments and protect posts criticizing the military, Asia-Pacific policy director Rafael Frankel summed up the coup response in a message to employees.
  • Four representatives of the ASEAN Human Rights Commission; Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand urges Myanmar to observe and respect the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter and the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration, all parties to resolve any disputes through lawful mechanisms and peaceful dialogue, according to the statement on the developments in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar by individual representatives to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on the Human Rights on Feb 5.
  • Teachers from the National Management Degree College (NMDC) and Yangon University of Education (YUOE)  launched the Civil Disobedience Movement by suspending their duties. 
  • The 80-years-old U Win Htein, chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), was arrested at the Ottarathiri Township Police Station in Naypyidaw, according to NLD Central Committee member U Kyi Toe.
  • 88 generation leaders called on the people to boycott the military-owned businesses as of the statement to the public on Feb 5. The statement adds “boycotting Military-run businesses such as beer, cigarettes,  SIM cards, TV channels is also effective for slowing down the military administration and making it unstable”.
