  • As of 8 PM, 28 Jan, a total of 16,378 samples were tested and found more 350 new cases and 14 deaths. MoHS has reported 139,152 of total confirmed cases including 123,556  discharged, and 3,103 deaths.
  • The suspension period of military operations will be extended until 28 February 2021 in all areas except for those where terrorist groups are active, with the aim to continue to hold talks with ethnic armed groups for durable peace, to implement the peace process smoothly and successfully, and to contain Covid-19, according to the statement of the office of Commander-in-Chief of Defence Service on Jan 28.
  • Neither individuals nor organizations can change the voters’ will  beyond the laws and there is no electoral fraud due to the weakness of voter lists,  according to a statement of the Union Election Commission (UEC)  issued on Jan 28.
  • Nearly 5,000 locals have been displaced due to clashes between Tatmadaw and the Karen National Union (KNU) on the border of Kayin and Bago region, said Kayin CSOs.
  • 13 undocumented immigrants from northern Shan State were arrested in Pathein, Ayeyarwaddy region on Jan 27, according to the Regional Police Force.

  • The United Nations Secretary-General urges to respect the result of the  Myanmar November general election, according to Secretary-General’s statement  issued on Jan 28.
  • Foreign diplomatic missions in Myanmar released a joint Statement today (Jan 29) that urgeing the Tatmadaw (Military) and all other parties in Myanmar, to adhere to democratic norms and values and to accept the outcome of the general election result.

  • It is reported that thousands of locals in Mon and Kayin state protested against the Tatmadaw and demanded the immediate withdrawal of all military bases in the areas under the control of the Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade 1.
  • 200 health workers from the Mandalay University of Medicine were inoculated against Covid-19 on Jan 27, the vaccination would be given in the next few days, said Dr. Khin Maung Lwin, rector of the University of Medicine (Mandalay).
  • Thailand is planning the repatriation process of 402 detained Myanmar migrant workers in Ranong, the town at the Thai-Myanmar border and 166 to be returned home in the first batch, according to the Ranong Mayor.
  • In northern Shan State, a 35-years-old man was injured in a landmine explosion in Kyaukme township on Jan 26, said U Tin Maung Thein, chairman of the Ziwita volunteer group. 
  • More than $ 1,000 million worth of drugs and related materials, nearly 20,000 drug offenders have been arrested in 2020, more than double the number in 2019, as of Myanmar Police Force.

  • As of 8 PM, 26 Jan, a total of 19,667 samples were tested and found more 411 new cases and 13 deaths. MoHS has reported 138,368 of total confirmed cases including 122, 781  discharged, and 3,082 deaths.
  • Health workers and volunteers will be vaccinated against the Covid-19 today as a first priority, and nationwide vaccination will begin on Feb 5, according to the Ministry of Health and Sport.
  • It is reported that clashes broke out between Tatmadaw and the Restoration Council of Shan State/ Shan State Army (RCSS/SSA) in Maingpan township, Linkhay District, Southern Shan State on Jan 25.  
  • Highly contagious coronavirus mutation has not been detected in Myanmar so far but people should be aware that the current coronavirus in Myanmar could change and mutate at any time, according to the Ministry of Health and Sport.
  • It is reported that a total of 55 hotels in Yangon have campaigned to stop Covid-19 by installing yellow signboards.
  • Myanmar expects the Kayin Done Yein traditional dance to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage list, according to the Kayin State government.
  • Persons affected by leprosy in Yaynanthar village, Mattayar township, Mandalay, are in need of food and aid during the Covid-19 period, according to the leprosy charity association in Yaynanthar village. 
  • It could not say that the military would take on the state responsibilities or not, said military spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun at a press conference on Tuesday regarding the response upon a reporter’s question about whether the military could be considered to seize power.
  • Police in Thabeikkyin Township, Mandalay region said that they have arrested those who are injecting sodium cyanide into the village drinking water pool in Sin Hmwe Village. On Dec 21, 2020, a woman died after consuming water from this pool and leaving a man and another young woman in a dizzy and vomit.

  • 38 townships have been reported thousands of Covid-19 cases, including 29 townships in Yangon region, 6 townships in Mandalay region, each township in Bago, Rakhine, and Mon region respectively, Mingalardon township has the highest number of Covid-19 cases with 6,079 and North Okkalapa township ranks 2nd with 5,867, according to the Ministry of Health and Sport.
  • Compensation for the Letpadaung copper mine project differs from the report of the investigation commission led by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, locals said at a press conference held near Sete village in Sagaing region on Jan 25.
  • If enough Covid-19 vaccines can be produced and imported, there will be allowed to be used in private hospitals and clinics, according to the director of the Central Epidemiology Unit.
  • 7 labor heads from the Unique HTT garment factory in Shwelinban industrial zone, Hlaingtharyar township, were charged under section 47 of the Labour Dispute Settlement Law, said Daw Moe Myint Sandar, chairwomen of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar.
  • There were 257 road accidents with 107 ware killed in 7 townships of Mandalay region in 2020, according to the regional traffic police force.

  • Nearly 1,000 locals in Belin township, Mon state protested for the first time on Jan 24 against building military bases near and within the villages, according to locals.
  • Health workers in Myanmar will be vaccinated against Covid-19 starting from Jan 27 as part of the initial phase, said an official from the Central Epidemiology Unit.
  • Myanmar Cartoonists Association is organizing a fundraiser to purchase Covid-19 vaccines, according to chairman U Win Aung, Myanmar Cartoonists Association.
  • People with pre-existing health conditions including hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer should receive Covid-19 vaccination because it could be risky if they become infected with Covid-19, according to the Ministry of Health and Sport.
  • The government will soon provide 56.0766 billion kyats for additional 2,011,095 households who did not have access to the 4th Covid-relief funding program, said U Min Thu, minister for the Union Government Office. 
  • The Ministry of Health and Sport warned that the infection rate will rise again if people do not comply with the Covid-19 health guidelines, despite there being  low infection cases currently.

  • Myanmar has recorded the 58th highest death toll in more than 200 countries with 3,013  deaths, according to the Worldometers.
  • Myanmar will receive 1.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines today(22Jan) and these will be administered to 750,000 people, said State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
  • More than 130 workers from the Hanmin garment factory in Shwelinban industrial zone, Hlaingtharyar township, protested in front of the factory after nine workers were fired for filing a complaint with the township labour department regarding the lack of legal rights, according to the chairwoman of the Federation of General Workers Myanmar.
  • It is reported that Italian Agency for Development Cooperation donated 1 million EUR to Yangon region Covid-19 response services at the Aung Myint Mo Covid-19 treatment center in South Dagon township.
  • New Hope Family Residence in Ayetharyar ward, Myitkyina, Kachin state, home for children whose families died because of AIDS, is in need of food and aid during the Covid-19 period, said U Al Zaw Mai from New Hope Family Residence. 
  • The chiefs ministers of regions and states will most possibly become from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) under the upcoming new government, said NLD spokesperson Dr. Zaw Myint Maung.
