NLD youth member feared dead is found alive

Oct 3, 2008 (DVB), A National League for Democracy youth member who went missing in August and was reported dead was found alive by his father at a police station in Rangoon.

Aung Moe Lwin, who was staying at Maggin monastery during the monk-led demonstrations last year and gave an interview about the arrests and beating of monks in the regime's crackdown, disappeared in early August.

He was seen by a fellow detainee being beaten in prison and his brother later received an anonymous phone call saying he had died at the hands of interrogators.

His father, U Thein Aung, went to Rangoon to establish what had happened but officials refused to give any information on Aung Moe Lwin's whereabouts.

NLD spokesperson Nyan Win said U Thein Aung was delighted when he got to Sanchaung police station just as Aung Moe Lwin was being brought there.

"His father reached Sanchaung police station at the same time as authorities were transporting him there and he saw him face to face," Nyan Win said.

Nyan Win said Aung Moe Lwin had been able to speak to his father briefly before he was taken away and told him not to worry.

Aung Moe Lwin told his father that he is being held along with 12 other unspecified people and will face charges of contacting illegal organisations.
