Rule of Law Committee deluged with complaints

Aung San Suu Kyi’s Rule of Law Committee has received more than 3,000 complaints from citizens across the country in the five months since its formation.

The committee’s secretary Win Myint said most of the missives filed concerned land confiscations and complaints directed at the judiciary and executive authorities.

According to the secretary, more than 2,000 of the complaints have been verified and forwarded to the concerned government departments.

A majority of the land grabs that were reported to the committee detailed incidents that occurred during the former military government’s reign.

“We are going to follow up on the cases with the concerned departments after giving them a timeframe for inquiry on the matters. Otherwise we have to talk with concerned union-level officials,” said Win Myint.
