Suu Kyi to miss parliamentary session after European tour

Aung San Suu Kyi will not attend the parliament’s new session that commences this week due to exhaustion after touring through Europe.

“Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will take time off from the parliament on [July] 4, 5 and 6 because she is too tired from the trip to Europe. But her health is OK,” National League for Democracy spokesperson Nyan Win told the AFP.

The opposition leader arrived back in Rangoon on Saturday after her 18-day trip, where she was greeted by thousands of people who came out into the streets to welcome her home, including senior NLD leaders Win Tin and Tin Oo and Burmese celebrities.

“I saw her greeting the crowd with a smile but she looked very exhausted – it could be due to the long flight or her busy schedule during the trip. I am worried for her health,” said actor Lu Minn.

Ohn Kyaing, spokesperson for Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party, said the opposition leader’s trip to Europe was still a success.

Suu Kyi delivered numerous speeches, meet with heads of state and collected her Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway.

“The trip went rather successful – she gave about eight speeches in five countries during her 18-day visit,” said Ohn Kyaing.

However, the famed icon’s health showed signs of physically fraying during her time away.

On 14 June after addressing the International Labour Organization, Suu Kyi had to stop a press conference in Geneva after falling ill and began vomiting. The leader cited jet lag and tiredness as the cause behind the episode.
