Health care in Burma

Dr Ei Cho (left) and Dr May Kyaw Thet examine a patient X-ray. Tuberculosis is common among clinic patients. A study recently published in The Lancet put Myanmar in the top 10 countries with the highest number of diabetes-linked TB (21,000 cases). The researchers attributed 15 percent of TB cases worldwide to diabetes, which will hinder efforts to eliminate TB and other communicable diseases. The WHO expects 592 million people worldwide to have diabetes by the year 2035. Already there are 72 million cases in Southeast Asia.
