Fire in Rangoon kills two

Dec 11, 2008 (DVB), A man and a woman were killed last night when a fire broke out at midnight last night in a six-storey building in Tamwe township in Rangoon, according to locals.

The woman died from smoke inhalation while the man was killed when he jumped from the fourth floor of the building near Yazana Plaza on 127st Street to escape the flames.

The extent of the damage to the building is not yet known.

Tamwe residents said that by the time fire fighters arrived on the scene, local residents had already extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire has not been established, but locals said it was likely to have started from candles that were being used because of electricity shortages.

Rangoon fire department declined to comment on the incident.
