Man wanted in hostage-taking incident in Rangoon

The Rangoon Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are looking for a man wanted in connection with a robbery and kidnapping incident that occurred on Tuesday morning.

The unknown assailant, said to be in his 30s, entered the home of Dr Shwe Pyi in Rangoon’s Kyimyindaing Township at around 10 am and grabbed the doctor’s 12-year-old daughter. He then held the girl at knifepoint and demanded a 5-million-kyat (US$4,300) ransom.

Shwe Pyi gave in to the demand, but after receiving the money, the man decided to take both the father and the child hostage, forcing the doctor to drive his own car as a getaway vehicle.
