Air Force helicopter crashes near Meikhtila

A Burmese Air Force trainer aircraft crashed during an exercise in central Burma on Tuesday.

The Office of the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief reported on its Facebook page that the Bell-206 helicopter suffered a technical problem after taking off from Meikhtila Air Base and crashed into the Mondai reservoir at 8:26 am on 26 April.

The helicopter pilots, Major Win Aung and Major Khun Kyaw Hlaing, were rescued from the waters by nearby fishermen. They were sent to the hospital with minor injuries.

The military said the Bell-206 helicopters, which were manufactured in 1977, had been retired from the Air Force for various reasons but recommissioned as trainer aircraft after going through “major repairs” serviced by an “overseas company”.

The military said it would conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
