The number of drug-related arrests during the Thingyan water festival was higher than last year, Burma’s national police announced today.
A total of 102 people – 94 men and 8 women – were apprehended on drug offences between 12–16 April, the statement said.
Police say they seized 40,407 amphetamine pills, more than nine kilos of “ice”, 6.6 kilos of opium, 45 grams of heroin, and other illicit materials.

During the same Thingyan period last year, 78 people were arrested.
Police have also stated that 285 people were killed, mostly in motor accidents, during this year’s festivities.
