38 killed as ferry sinks in Burma

Jul 4, 2008 (AP), State media says at least 38 people have died after a motorized ferry sank in a river of Burma’s cyclone-battered Irrawaddy delta.

The New Light of Myanmar newspaper says the ship with 82 on board went down in the Yway river Tuesday after water entered its stern section. The newspaper did not say exactly how the accident occurred.

The paper says the remaining 44 people aboard were rescued.

The delta was largely devastated by Cyclone Nargis which struck in early May, killing more than 84,000 people.
