Affordable rented housing pledge

The Deputy Construction Minister Soe Tint has pledged to implement a public rented housing scheme for citizens who are without land.

Responding to Rangoon MP Tin Maung Oo’s question about housing for low-income people, Soe Tint said, “We are considering the citizens with no land ownership; those families who immigrated to Rangoon from rural areas in search for jobs and are living illegally. Some have lived in Rangoon for many years in this way.

“Concerned government organisations are compiling a list of these families and individuals who have settled in certain areas for many years. These organisations will coordinate with regional governments to implement a public rented housing scheme for them,” he told the parliamentary lower house on Wednesday.

He said the government is drawing up plans for low-cost housing, which will be affordable for citizens with low incomes, but he did not elaborate where the projects will be or what the scale of the new builds will be.

In recent years the government has implemented cheap housing projects in Rangoon and Mandalay. Buyers were selected through a lottery system.

President Thein Sein has urged the government to invest in affordable housing projects, not only in the two biggest cities but also in other regional capitals including Taunggyi, Moulmein, Bassein, Monywa, Magwe and Sittwe for the poor population.
