Aung San Suu Kyi requests clothes from Yangon home ahead of ASEAN envoy visit to Myanmar

The ousted National League for Democracy (NLD) party told DVB that its co-founder and leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained by the regime in Naypyidaw since the military coup on Feb. 1, 2021, has instructed staff at her Yangon residence to send clothing to her in Naypyidaw, where’s she been held for over five years.

An NLD party official told DVB on the condition of anonymity that Aung San Suu Kyi requested 20 outfits from her wardrobe at her 54 University Avenue home in Yangon, the famed address where she had previously spent 15 years under house arrest and where her brother Aung San Oo has tried four times—but has failed—to auction it since August 2022.

Jailed Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi is currently serving 18-years after several reductions to her original 33-year sentence handed down by a regime court after she was convicted of multiple charges dismissed by her supporters as “politically-motivated.”

Aung San Suu Kyi was reportedly transferred from prison to house arrest in the capital Naypyidaw on April 30, but this hasn’t been independently verified.

A source close to Naypyidaw Prison told DVB on the condition of anonymity that the regime has assigned Aung San Suu Kyi’s former staff members to send her what she requests from her 54 University Avenue home.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Special Envoy on Myanmar Maria Theresa Lazaro will visit Naypyidaw on Oct. 28-29 to discuss the regional bloc’s efforts to deliver humanitarian aid into the country with senior regime officials.

Despite repeated requests from the ASEAN 2026 Chair, the Philippines, no meeting has been allowed between Lazaro and Aung San Suu Kyi.

On Oct. 22, Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed to speak to her son for the first time in over five years.

“I think she’s being held at an undisclosed location in Naypyidaw somewhere. As far as I’m aware she’s not in prison but she’s not under house arrest either. She’s not in her own home,” Aris told DVB in an exclusive interview, adding that he will not be given regular family access to her from the regime.

Aris renewed calls for Aung San Suu Kyi’s release under the “Free Her” campaign on Sept. 7, which urges the regime to immediately release all 15,084 other political prisoners documented by the Assistance Association of Political Prisoners (AAPP) in Myanmar.

Min Aung Hlaing led the February 2021 military coup that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi’s NLD administration and jailed her along with NLD President Win Myint, who was released from prison in a Myanmar New Year amnesty on April 17 but has been held under strict regime surveillance ever since.
