Bago couple released on bail

Oct 22, 2007 (DVB), Two former teachers who were arrested last week after challenging a pro-government rally in Bago have been released on bail, according to their relatives.

A close relative of Maung Maung Oo and Ni Ni Mar, speaking on condition of anonymity, told DVB that the couple were released on bail on Saturday after some influential townspeople agreed to act as guarantors for them.

"[S]ome influential characters in town signed with the police to say they would be guarantors for them. They are back at home now and waiting to attend their court hearing on 30 October," the relative said.

The couple have returned to their home in Paung Tal township and will appear before the township court on 30 October charged with inciting a riot and causing public alarm.

Maung Maung Oo and Ni Ni Mar were arrested by township police on 16 October after they displayed posters denouncing the brutality of the military regime on the wall of their house, which pro-government protestors passed during their march.
