Bomb in Dike Oo kills 1, injures 5

Jul 15, 2008 (DVB), A bomb explosion in Bago’s Dike Oo township yesterday morning killed at least one person and left about five others seriously injured, according to locals.

A town resident said the bomb went off on a Shwedaga express passenger bus running between Kyauk Kyi township and Rangoon as it passed Kawliya bridge at the exit of Dike Oo township.

"A man from Kyaukdaga township was killed in the explosion and the injured were sent to Dike Oo hospital," said the local.

"About five people were seriously injured."

The official account of the incident, published in the state-run New Light of Myanmar, named 55-year-old U Khant from Kyauk Kyi as the man killed and said only one other person was injured.

Another Dike Oo resident said she thought the number of casualties could be higher.

"We heard that three people were killed in the bomb explosion," she said.

Township residents said the authorities had launched an investigation into the incident.

Dike Oo township hospital and police station were unavailable for comment.

The New Light of Myanmar blamed unspecified "insurgents" for the attack.

"Insurgents have committed destructive acts to jeopardize the stability of the State, community peace and prevalence of law and order and to cause panic among the people," the paper said.
