Burma to host ‘Sustainable Energy and Water Resources Management Week’

Burma has been an attractive investment destination for foreign investors in recent years and is ready to take on the challenge of achieving the new heights by bringing more Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the country and boost the economy particularly in the energy and water sectors. This will be achieved through the hosting of two of the most remarkable conferences under an umbrella event: the “Sustainable Energy and Water Resources Management Week”, featuring the fourth edition of the Myanmar Green Energy Summit (MGES2016) and the inaugural Global Water Conference (GWC2016) at Sule Shangri-La, Rangoon, Burma from 15-18 August 2016.

According to the economic analysts, Burma’s GDP growth is poised to grow at 8 to 10 percent annually until 2030 from US$80 billion to about US$200 billion in 2030. Since 1988, when Burma first started tracking foreign investment, until the end of 2015, the Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) had approved $59.153 billion in foreign investment from 1033 international companies. In fiscal year 2015, over $4.7 billion is committed into electrical power generation.

Despite of all the tremendous growth in both GDP and FDI that Burma has achieved over the years, one of the main concerns that has been deliberated and discussed for policy reforms is the country’s utility model system. The current power and water infrastructures in Burma are outdated and overstretched, connected mainly only to the major cities. In order to achieve universal electrification rate and safe water access to all, at the same time to support the country’s booming economic growth, Burma requires urgent assistance to improve and upgrade its power and water infrastructures. This initiative requires massive amount of funding and investment.

The “Sustainable Energy and Water Resources Management Week 2016” is designed to bring together potential investors and industry experts from all over the world at one place for the exchange of ideas and insights into the current status of Burma’s energy and water industries and explore possible collaboration. This event is aimed to serve as a platform for both energy and water industries players to:

-Uncover trends, insights and opportunities in both energy and water industries
-Be updated with the latest policies and regulations especially on FDI
-Network with government authorities and potential business partners
-Engage with global leaders and experts in both energy and water & wastewater industries
-Connect with the who’s who in integrated water and energy solutions
-Pre-arrange business matching meetings with local and international industry players

Organized by Confexhub and supported by the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems, Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Department of Rural Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Yangon City Development Committee and Myanmar Engineering Society, this event, on the theme of “Energy & Water Resources Management: The Catalyst For Sustainable Growth”, is expected to draw around 500 participants from over 25 countries involved in the energy and water industries to converge together and explore the investment opportunities, meet face-to-face with the local government and project owners to discuss on pertinent issues revolving around the energy and water industries in Burma.

According to Datuk Dr. Abdul Aziz, Chairman of Confexhub, who is also the Organizing Chairman of SEWRMW 2016 Secretariat:

We have had initiated many FDI projects in Myanmar through our series of investment summits for the past four years. Some of the international players, just to name a few, like Vestas, Canadian Solar, EAM Solar, Jingko, Trina, Yingli, Meralco, ABB, Surbana, China Huaneng, GE, Three Gorgers, Power China, Andritz, Sumitomo, Poyry, DNVGL, China Southern Power, EDF are our regular participants that have been continuously supporting us.

Through our one-to-one closed-door meeting arrangements, these companies have established good connection in setting their footprint in the Myanmar’s energy sector.

With the supports and blessings given by the various Ministries under the leadership of the new government, we are confident that we will once again, draw in bigger FDI to Myanmar, to develop the energy and water sector of the country.

We urge all industry players, policy makers, industry experts, investors to take this opportunity to meet, discuss and decide on new directions, strategies and development plans so that we can together expand the power and water sector and increase sustainability.

Mr. Paul Yeo, the Organizing Director of SEWRMW 2016 Secretariat commented: “This is the only platform that brings together international investors to meet face-to-face with local authorities and project owners at one place on a large scale basis and initiates communications and partnerships in order to explore and secure projects.”

“We are expecting a bigger success with trade missions from US, China, Malaysia, India, that have confirmed their participation.”
