Campaign trail

Burma’s revered opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi yesterday drew tens of thousands of supporters to cheer her on as campaigning began for the 1 April by-elections. She told crowds in the southern Burmese region of Tavoy that changes needed to be made to the 2008 military constitution before Burma can achieve real democracy.

This was her first political trip outside of Rangoon since 2003, which ended in the bloody Depayin massacre in which around 70 of her supporters were killed by a regime-backed mob. This time however the day passed peacefully, and she returned to Rangoon yesterday evening to prepare for the next stage in the campaign trail.
