Daw Suu meets liaison minister

Oct 26, 2007 (DVB), National League for Democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had a meeting with the Burmese government's Minister for Relations Aung Kyi at a guesthouse in Rangoon yesterday.

State media reported that the meeting was held at Seinle Kantha Guest House and lasted from 2pm to 3.15pm.

U Lwin, a secretary and spokesperson for the NLD, welcomed this latest development.

"We having been hoping for [this] for a long time. Before we were a bit uncomfortable while we were waiting for the meeting," U Lwin said.

"Mr. Gambari is putting in effort to bring about dialogue between the two parties. According to Mr. Gambari, this dialogue with Daw Suu will be followed by dialogues with other political parties and ethnic groups. We look forward to that as well," he added.

The meeting followed reports that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been moved from her house yesterday.

Nyan Win, a spokesperson for the NLD, confirmed that a convoy of three cars was seen leaving Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's house on University Avenue at around 2pm and going to a government guesthouse.

NLD members went to the house at around 3pm to check reports that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi had been taken to a meeting and confirmed that she was not at home.

Aung Kyi was appointed Minister for Relations by the military government in early October and tasked to liaise with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
