Residents of Mataw village of Mingin Township in Sagaing Region stated that the death toll from the airstrike on June 3 has risen to more than 38. Over 20 residents were confirmed killed when the airstrike was carried out on a crowded area, where people were gathered for a wedding ceremony.
“The list [of those killed] is still being compiled. We had to transport survivors to the hospital but some died on the way and we buried them,” said a Mingin resident. “Two of the victims were children who were seven and eight-years-old. The villagers can’t gather anymore as they are afraid of another attack,” said another resident.
The Mingin Township People’s Defense Force (PDF) has been intercepting military convoys traveling along the Chindwin River. The military has retaliated by burning down homes in villages along the river. Regime media reported that many PDF members were killed but this was denied by a spokesperson.
