Explosions rock Armed Forces’ golf tourney

At least two people were injured after bombs exploded at an Armed Forces Day golf tournament in in Shan state’s Tachilek on Saturday.

A government official in the border town said two bombs exploded at Regina Golf Club on Saturday. The first explosive detonated around 7:30am. The device had been planted inside a trash bin near the 13th hole, but failed to injure any bystanders. The second bomb exploded an hour later near a tee box, which injured a golfer – identified as Ah Byar – and a security guard – Zaw Ye Min.

There have been unconfirmed rumours that the explosion also injured a government soldier.

The official said a bomb was found around 10:30am and was removed. Tachilek’s police are investigating the incident.

While the area surrounding Tachilek has been relatively peaceful in recent years, northern and central Shan state has been a hotbed for rebel activity. Although the government signed a ceasefire with the Shan State Army South last month, violent skirmishes continue to break out between rebel groups and government troops.
