Former PM's death commemorated

Feb 15, 2008 (DVB), Activists gathered to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the death of U Nu, Burma's first prime minister, at his daughter's house in Bahan township yesterday.

U Nu's daughter San San Nu hosted the event at her home on the Pyidaungsu Yeiktha housing estate in Bahan township, Rangoon division, and offered mohingya to monks and guests, who included veteran politicians members of the National League for Democracy and the 88 generation students group.

U Nu became the first prime minister of Burma in 1948 and served until 1956.

He held the post on two further occasions, from 1957 to 1958 and from 1960 to 1962, when he was toppled by the then army chief general Ne Win in a military coup.

He died on 14 February 1995 at the age of 87.
