Htin Kyaw in isolation after prison protest

Mar 11, 2008 (DVB), Detained activist Htin Kyaw has been in solitary confinement for the past 10 days after shouting political slogans against regime leaders and the referendum.

Htin Kyaw, who has been detained in Insein prison since 25 August for his role in instigating commodity price protests, shouted out statements such as "generals Than Shwe, Maung Aye and Thein Sein are megalomaniacs," and "I have no confidence in the referendum".

He has now been placed in solitary confinement in Insein prison, reportedly in the canine unit where dogs are usually kept.

His wife has been refused permission to visit him or send him any parcels of food or other necessities, and the status of his health is unknown.

Sithu Maung, a student inmate of the prison, has also been put in solitary confinement for staging a protest inside the prison.
