Junta to reconsider satellite fee increase

Jan 10, 2008 (DVB), Myanmar Post and Telecommunications is postponing the introduction of the new satellite licence renewal fees for 2008 until further notice, according to one of its officials.

An MPT official in Rangoon said that the government telecommunications ministry has told them to delay the increase in the annual satellite licence fee, which was recently raised from 6000 kyat to one million kyat, placing it out of the reach of most Burmese people.

"We have been instructed not to bring in the [new] licence fees until further notice," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"We will be informed of the new price for satellite licenses; we don’t know yet when they will let us know about the new fees or how much it will be this time."

The official said that satellite viewers in Rangoon should keep in regular contact with their MPT office to find out about the new license fees so that they will not have to pay a fine for late settlement of bills.
