In the last few weeks fighting in northern Kachin state has intensified. The Burmese army has admitted to using fighter jets to attack the rebels but maintains that it is only acting in self-defence. The Kachin, who are fighting for greater autonomy and ethnic rights in Burma, say the army is advancing on their headquarters.
