Lahu New Year celebrations in Chiang Mai, Thailand

The first international Lahu New Year celebration was held by the Lahu community on Jan. 11 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The international event saw thousands of Lahu people attend from Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Myanmar. The New Year festivities will continue until Jan. 13. The Lahu people live in Shan State, as well as in China, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam.

Myay Wine Dance is performed by the Lahu at New Year. A small pine tree is placed in the middle of the dance floor, and dancing takes place around it.
Hand washing ceremony is always performed during traditional festivals. The hand washing ceremony is a symbol of purification. yyoung people pay respects and apologize to the elders and parents in the village as a part of the tradition.
Renaud Meyer, the Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Thailand, was in attendance.
