Jun 16, 2008 (DVB), Eleven people, including two children, were killed and several houses destroyed in a landslide in Mandalay division’s Moegok township last Wednesday, according to local residents.
A Moegok resident said several houses collapsed in the landslide, which was brought on by heavy rain at around 1am on 11 June near the Moegok village of Ohn Kine.
"Locals only found out about the landslide the next morning , all the bodies of the victims buried under the rubble were recovered," the resident said.
"They were brought to the hospital mortuary before being buried in a funeral on Thursday."
A doctor on duty at Moegok hospital said the rain also caused flooding in the town’s Htar Kwe Kyauk ward on the same night that six houses were destroyed in Ohn Kine.
"Eleven people , seven males and four females, including two children , were killed in the landslide."
Heavy rain usually causes flooding in Moegok township in the monsoon season every year, but this year has set a record for the highest number of casualties in the past 30 years in Moegok.
The Burmese state media published a report on Saturday about the landslide but it did not say how many people were killed.
